Unique places to stay along the way

hotels.com
Anyone can build a hotel or buy an old Victorian-style home and create a nice to place to stay filled with all of the comforts of home for travelers.

But what we want to list here are the truly unique lodgings -- refurbished historic hotels and bed and breakfasts that stand apart from all the others -- found along America's two-lane highways.

Below you will find places we've been fortunate enough to visit, and we recommend them highly -- either for a quiet weekend getaway from the stress of everyday life, or just as a stopover as your explore the country.

Ruebel Hotel, Grafton, Illinois

Inn at Eagle's Nest, Louisiana, Missouri
